Viruses/Malware – Fake Alerts

Recently, we’ve seen a significant increase of infections by programs claiming that a user’s system is infected.  These programs have reported themselved to be Internet Security 2010AntiVirus Live, Personal Security 2010, and many others.  These are NOT programs that you want on your system.  You should only respond to alerts from AntiVirus programs, or Malware programs that you installed, or you know your system administrator installed.

What should you do? Ignore the alerts, and run a full system scan of your computer, if you can.  MalwareBytes has been very successful for us in the past as detecting and removing various Malware programs.  AVG has been very effective at detecting and removing viruses.  They both have basic free versions for personal use, as well as paid subscriptions, which are always worth the investment.

What if I can’t clean it up myself? Give us a holler!  If you’re a corporate user, send me an email at trey@verustech.com, and we’ll get you taken care of.  If you’re a personal user, you might consider contacting Geek Squad at Best Buy, they actually have good results.

Summary. You are always under attack.  Be careful.  If you aren’t 100% sure what you are clicking on, DON’T DO IT!
